The 1954-S Roosevelt dime is the San Francisco circulation issue of the year, with 22,860,000 coins struck in the second-to-last year of S-mint dime production. By 1954 the San Francisco facility was winding down its general circulation work, focused mainly on smaller-volume regional cash supply, and would close out its dime program after the 1955-S strike. The "S" mintmark appears on the reverse to the left of the torch base, in the standard branch-mint position John R. Sinnock had set in the master die. The 1954-S sits near the bottom of the 1954 production trio, with Denver and Philadelphia each producing roughly four to five times the San Francisco output. Mint Sets that year shipped one example each of the three dimes along with the other denominations.
The 1954-S carries the silver-era specifications: 2.5 grams, 17.9 mm, 90% silver and 10% copper, reeded edge. Strike quality on San Francisco coins of this year runs from average to strong, with the torch bands forming the usual diagnostic point for assessing definition. The Full Bands (FB) designation requires the two horizontal lines on the torch's central band to be fully separated and unbroken, a standard that 1954-S examples meet at a respectable rate but not consistently. Authentication on a circulation 1954-S includes the standard weight check, mintmark inspection for added-mintmark tampering (low-risk on this common date but worth a brief look), and confirmation that the reeded edge is intact and uniform. Modern fakes are not a meaningful concern at the current retail price level.
The 1954-S is a Regular-classification coin in the Roosevelt series, trading at modest premiums over silver bullion through circulated and lower Mint State grades. PCGS and NGC populations run into the thousands across MS-60 through MS-66, with FB designations adding a meaningful premium at MS-66 and finer. The date is sometimes assembled into San Francisco-only Roosevelt subsets, where it sits one slot before the 1955-S final issue. For broader context, see the Roosevelt Dime series history.
