The Philadelphia Mint produced over 4.23 billion cents in 1974, the year Richard Nixon resigned the presidency. On August 8, Nixon announced his resignation in a televised address, becoming the only president to leave office under such circumstances. Gerald Ford took the oath of office the next day and a month later pardoned Nixon, a decision that generated intense public debate.
The 1974 Philadelphia cent carries no mintmark. It is extremely common, with billions produced to meet the needs of an inflationary economy. Prices were rising steadily, and the nation was mired in the aftermath of the oil crisis. The 1974 cent is one of the most readily available coins in the Memorial series.
